Smoky Mountains Loop
This convenient loop starts and ends in Maggie Valley, North Carolina. If you account for rest stops and meals, it should take you around eight hours. But the views are so incredible that the time will fly by and feel way faster!
Your first iconic view will be found on the Blue Ridge Parkway, which offers stunning vistas of mountains and forest. Early in the route, you will pass the information center at the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It's a great place to stop to ask any last-minute questions or pick up a souvenir for a loved one at the gift shop.
From there, you will hit Clingman's Dome. This spot is the highest point of elevation in the park and in Tennessee, so you know the viewpoint will be incredible. You'll find another great vista later in the ride at the Foothills Parkway. Finally, your last major viewpoint will be Bald River Falls. You'll be able to spot them from the road, but it's worth the walk to go up close to their majestic scene.
Cherohala Skyway Loop
With this route, you'll get to experience the two national forests of Cherokee National Forest and Nantahala National Forest. This route covers about half of the route that you would experience in the Smoky Mountains loop and also takes about eight hours.
One great viewpoint is the Fontana Dam, which was finished back in 1945. Near the dam is the Fontana Reservoir Group Pavilion which is a scenic spot to take a break and get photos of the view.
One motorcycle-themed stop is the Tree of Shame. It houses parts of motorcycles that didn't make it through the Tail of the Dragon route. From there, you can head over to Dragon Pitt BBQ for a classic barbeque meal. You'll then pass through more stunning sights before heading back to the start.
